Medicine Lodge is nestled in a valley directly east of the gypsum hills. Settled in 1873 and named a city of the third class in 1879, today, Medicine Lodge is prosperous in the industries of gypsum, cattle, agriculture, crude oil and natural gas.

Medicine Lodge is located in south central Kansas, U.S. highways 160 and 281 also junction within Medicine Lodge.
